Gravitas, from Latin weight and seriousness, one of the most respected virtues in ancient Rome, applies very well to what João Brilhante's last thirty years have been, dedicated to the art of making surfboards, and the relationship he has with the world around him, especially understanding the waves and the ocean.

AIt was in 1991, with science as the engine of his curiosity, and through experimentation, that João followed his path and his ideas. Isolated in the middle of the Atlantic, physically and mentally, it was when the internet was still a dream of a few, and access to knowledge was limited, that the first surfboards began to take shape.

Taking as a starting point the study of meteorology and waves, awareness of the phenomenon of beach manipulation was quickly gained, and with it the improvement of small waves. From there to elliptism was a little jump, and, it's from this concept, that the lines and volumes of his boards are developed. Tested on the manipulated bottoms of Praia das Milícias, with his buoys that work like suction cups, moving little by little each grain of sand.

Misunderstood by many, such as Galileo and other thinkers, João dealt with a surf industry growing in the opposite direction to his, where competition and light “paper” surfboards occupied the line ups and quiver of most surfers. Never giving up on his ideas, he has spent the last few years developing boards that have adapted to different energy states of the sea, in order to be in the greatest efficiency and harmony with the waves, resulting in a greater state of happiness for the surfer.

In an increasingly individualistic, sad and exhausted world (the surf is moving towards that), Casa Improvável is pleased to present the relevance that João's surfboards have, more and more, nowadays and in everyone's surf.

After all, it is happiness that we must take seriously and with weight in our lives. Gravitas.
